Composing

Every MYC student is taught the basic principals of composition, and writes a song for the Music for Young Children Composition Festival each year. What a wonderful and fun festival it is! The compositions are sent to the MYC headquarters to be judged. Each year, a panel of judges plays and evaluates approximately 13,000 pieces composed by students 3 years of age and up. Everyone who sends in a piece will receive a beautiful 8 ½ X 5 ½ inch sticker. The best compositions from each level in each region in Canada, the US, New Zealand, Viet Nam and South Korea will be chosen as finalists, first, second, third and fourth place winners will be chosen for each level in each region, and these students will receive another certificate. Then all the first place winners, for each level are considered again, to choose the International first, second, third and fourth place winners. Those four students receive a really special certificate. It is a great honor to receive any of these certificates. They are well worth framing. Everyone gets the big participation sticker because everyone who submits a song for this festival is a winner!

Canada is divided into three regions – the West, Ontario, and the East. Our compositions are entered in the Ontario category.

Every student who writes a composition deserves a round of applause for a job well done!!! It is SO exciting to see what the children have written!! Composing integrates aural and written skills and gives children a sense of ownership.

This year in November we are pleased to be offering our students a Composition Workshop with musical prodigy, Tyler Seidenberg!!! Tyler is a multi award winning composer, pianist, singer, actor and drummer. He started playing the piano when he was 5 years old and started composing at 10 years of age. At age 12 he made his first CD with 9 original songs and he performed 2 of them on national tv. We are so excited to welcome Tyler!!
