Fundraising Profile: Pennies for Practicing

By Catherine Cachia

SKETCH was thrilled to partner with Michelle Fedorowich, a long-time volunteer in the SKETCH music studio, on Pennies for Practicing, a creative and musical fundraising initiative of the Fedorowich Music For Young Children studio in Mississauga. Each student asked their friends and family to sponsor them for every minute they committed to practicing the piano over a 12-week period, in the lead up to their big annual recital. Some students were sponsored a penny per minute, others a nickel, some even a loonie.

We were honoured to see the efforts of over 100 students collectively generate more than $5,000 for SKETCH’s thriving and expanding music program, and a great sense of pride and accomplishment in themselves. Long & McQuade Musical Instrumentsgenerously donated a guitar for the student who raised the most money through their practicing. Recital day was a beautiful showcase of creativity, young talent, and dedication--some qualities artists here at SKETCH can relate to.

Sisters Jaynika and Anjali Shah raised almost $500 by asking their friends and family members to sponsor them. For the girls, art is one of their favourite subjects, so they really welcomed the opportunity to help make art accessible for others. “It’s a great way to raise funds for a worthwhile cause while giving kids the extra motivation to practice daily,” says Deepa Shah, the girls’ mother.
Here at SKETCH, we continue to be motivated and inspired by what young, creative people can accomplish. Huge thank-you goes out to all the students, parents, and donors who contributed to this initiative! If you are involved with a music school and would like to run a Pennies for Practicing initiative with your students or children, we would love to hear from you.
